Who We Are

Sarah Graham
Speech and Language Therapist

Hi, I'm Sarah, and the Speech and Language Therapist here at The Communication Corner. I first studied Psychology at the University of Glasgow, before going on to study Speech and Language Therapy at Queen Margaret University. Since graduating, I have worked as a Speech and Language Therapist in both Scotland and Australia, gaining a wealth of experience supporting children with a range of speech, language and communication needs. I have worked for the NHS in Scotland and in private practice and for the public health care system in Australia. I am passionate about supporting children to reach their full potential and have a particular interest in speech sound disorders and early intervention, supporting children in the early years who are late to talk.

I use play-based, evidence-driven techniques that keep children engaged, while helping them to develop the skills they need to thrive! No two children are the same, so speech and language therapy sessions should not be the same for every child! When children are engaged in activities they enjoy, they're more motivated to communicate, take turns, solve problems, and practise new skills without it feeling like "work."

That means one session with me, might involve rescuing dinosaurs from a volcano, racing toy cars down ramps, or building huge creations with Lego. Another session might include a scavenger hunt, an obstacle course, or a game of catch with a ball. Some sessions, we will be engaging in imaginative play with dolls, action figures, toy kitchens, farms, castles, pirates or superheroes. Or maybe puzzles, drawing or craft activities. We might play many of the fun, competitive games I have in the cupboard- Pop Up Pirate, Guess Who?, Connect 4, Dobble, Uno, Jenga, or Buckaroo!  We might go fishing with magnetic fishing rods or search for hidden treasure. For children with more specific passions and interests, I can find a way to include their interests. I've had sessions that have included Pokémon, Bluey, Minecraft, Toy Story, the weather, construction vehicles, dinosaurs, and many other things.

While it might look like we're "just playing" at times, the activities we are doing are always adapted to create meaningful opportunities to develop your child's communication skills. Whether we're practising speech sounds, building vocabulary, improving understanding, developing interaction and social communication skills, or increasing confidence, we are always working on something to support your child!

My approach is always family-centred. I will work with you and your child to identify and work towards your specific goals, and help you in a way that is going to work for your individual family life!

When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband and little boy. We enjoy exploring the great outdoors, going on camping trips, walking and paddle boarding. I have recently started running, doing the couch to 5k programme- the verdict is still out on whether I am a runner or not!!
